Diffusion mediated transport and the flashing ratchet

Diffusion mediated transport is a phenomenon in which a unidirectional motion of particles is achieved as a result of two opposing tendencies: diffusion, which spreads the particles uniformly through the medium and transport, which concentrates the particles at some special sites. The flashing ratchet version of the Brownian motor, a simple model for protein motors, where the switching between ...

A Kinetic Investigation of a Carrier-Mediated Transport through a Bulk Liquid Membrane

The kinetics of the potassium thiocyanate transport mediated by dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 (L) through a bulk liquid membrane is studied experimentally and theoretically. The proposed model is based on the assumption of a pure diffusion of the complex salt [K·L]+SCN¯ through the liquid membrane stagnant films at the interfaces. It illustrates the ...

Remarks about diffusion mediated transport: thinking about motion in small systems

We describe a dissipation principle/variational principle which may be useful in modeling motion in small viscous systems and provide brief illustrations to brownian motor or molecular rachet situations which are found in intracellular transport. Monge-Kantorovich mass transport and Wasserstein metric play an interesting role in these developments. Some properties of the system that ensure the ...

Stochastic models of intracellular transport

The interior of a living cell is a crowded, heterogenuous, fluctuating environment. Hence, a major challenge in modeling intracellular transport is to analyze stochastic processes within complex environments. Broadly speaking, there are two basic mechanisms for intracellular transport: passive diffusion and motor-driven active transport. Diffusive transport can be formulated in terms of the mot...

Molecular motors pulling cargos in the viscoelastic cytosol: how power strokes beat subdiffusion.

The discovery of anomalous diffusion of larger biopolymers and submicron tracers such as endogenous granules, organelles, or virus capsids in living cells, attributed to the viscoelastic nature of the cytoplasm, provokes the question whether this complex environment equally impacts the active intracellular transport of submicron cargos by molecular motors such as kinesins: does the passive anom...
